Ten questions with Freddy Perry, the man behind Benchpress the movie.

1. Why benches and how long have you been bench obsessed?

I think it started when we were filming for Methods Of Prediction. I had hit a couple of bench spots in Minnesota, and on a trip to Boston I saw these two green benches I just had to hit. It was so much fun. The winter after I was posting a clip from those benches on instagram, and that´s when the Benchpress idea came to life.

2. How many tries did that ender take?

Actually not that many tries believe it or not. 10 attempts where I actually got on the bench? I might be full of it, ask Max. It was at the end of a long day and I was kinda fucking around, because my first tries were not even close. I was all over the place. It was hard getting the board to go straight onto the bench. And getting to the bench. It was also hard for me to do it regular, it would actually feel more comfortable switch since I skate goofy haha. That trick had been in my mind for a few years. That was easily the best day for Benchpress, we got so much footage.

3. What is Ducksjen?

Ducksjen is my homie crew in Norway. We made Ducksjen The Movie and Klaustrofobiatch in 2010 and 2011 I think. Kasper Häggström made those and since he agreed to make this one it just made sense that it was presented by Ducksjen. We used the same logo style and vibe throughout the video.

4. Now that the video is done are you going to give the benches some time to rest or just keep pumping out reps?

I´m giving it a rest for sure, but I´m always going to be hitting some benches. I´m still doing Benchpress as a project, make some clothes and stuff and some edits. I don´t think we will make another full video though. It was a one-time thing for Kasper and I. But it was seriously the best time ever making and filming this thing.

5. Seems like you got pretty ripped during production of Benchpress, who else was swole up with clips?

I mean I am obviously ripped. Max got pretty swole up himself.

6. Describe the perfect bench.

Rounded steel bar bench with plastic seating, no handles, decent length, slight downhill run. And then there are four of them in a line.

7. Mini shred always looks fun but can be pretty gnarly, was there a trick or bench that terrified you?

It can be gnarly for sure. I told everyone from the beginning: Never underestimate a bench. They´ll get you… I got broke off for three weeks after hitting my thigh on a bench in November. And the slam didn´t look bad so didn´t even make the video. None that terrified me this year I don´t think, but the bench hop over the fence I hit in Minnesota for Methods Of Prediction was really scary.

8. How was the energy in the gym?

Competitive.

9. You have two Warbingtons in Benchpress, is that the perfect amount?

I can´t decide if two or zero is the perfect amount.. I´m gonna say that you can´t get enough Warbingtons.

10. You just got a pro model with Dinosaurs Will Die, you’re on Bent Metal Binding Works and have just released an instant cult classic shred flick with stunning shower scenes. Have you considered just ending it here?

Haha, I love the shower scenes. Who knows, I just turned 27 so it might be lights out for me this year.
